How to check and activate the SmartCard service (ScardSvr Service)

  1. Press . In the run prompt, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Double-click SmartCard.
  3. The SmartCard Properties window appears.
    Remark: If your SmartCard is not present in the list of services go to "How to install the SmartCard service."

  4. In the Startup type drop-down list, select Automatic.

  5. Click Start.
  6. Click the Apply button.
  7. Click the OK button.

If the issue persists, install the SmartCard service (ScardSvr Service).

Attention: the procedures described below will modify your Windows registry. If these modification are not properly made, your system may become unusable. We advise you to contact your system administrator to perform these modifications and to ask him to backup your Windows registry first.

The installation of the SmartCard service (ScardSvr) differs according to your operating system:

  1. Download the correct SmartCard Service .txt file
    1. Right click your windows version .txt file
    2. In the menu, click Save target as...
    3. In the Save As window, choose "Desktop" as location.
    4. Next in the "Save as Type" box choose All Files (*.*)
    5. In the box "File Name" you need to add .reg at the end of the filename.
    6. Click Save.
  2. Remove the current SmartCard Service:
    1. Press . In the run prompt, type regedit and press Enter to open the registry editor.
    2. In regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SCardSvr
    3. Right click on the SCardSvr key in the left column and choose Delete.
  3. Install the SmartCard Service again:
    1. Double-click the file you have downloaded to install the SmartCard Service again.
    2. Click Yes in the message box. when asked "Are you sure you want to continue?"
    3. Click OK in the message box that follows.
  4. Cleanup and Reboot to complete the installation:
    1. Delete the file "ScardSvr.reg".
    2. Reboot your computer.
  5. You have now reinstalled the SmartCard service.

  6. Check the SmartCard service status with the "How to check and activate the card reader service (ScardSvr Service)"method.

More information:

  • "Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service."
    In that case, reinstall the Smart Card Service.
  • "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"; OR
    "Could not stop the Windows service name service on Local Computer."
    The resolution for this problem can be found in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, article Q886695.

  • "Error 1075: the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."
    Your system requires another service to start prior to the smart card service. If you recently executed Windows updates, this dependent service might have been removed.
    To remove the dependency:
    • open the command prompt as administrator (typ 'cmd' in the windows search and do a right click on the 'command promt' and select 'run as administrator')
    • enter the command sc config scardsvr depend= /
    • press enter
    • if successfull, you should see the following displayed: ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS

    To confirm if the dependencies for 'SCardSvc' are removed, run this command:
    sc qc ScardSvr
    The dependencies field should be empty

    To restart the smartcardservice, run this command:
    net start ScardSvr
